Russia Launches Mass Production of Heavy Duty BAZ Trucks

Russian manufacturer AO Romanov has officially started the mass production of heavy all-wheel-drive trucks and specialized vehicle platforms under the BAZ brand. The production lines are located in the Shushary industrial zone of Saint Petersburg and began operations on December 26, 2025, according to the company’s press service and industry reports.

Romanov, a subsidiary of the state-owned defense conglomerate Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defence Concern, is manufacturing these vehicles at a site formerly operated by European truck makers MAN and Scania. While the facility was previously used to assemble heavy commercial vehicles for those international brands, it has now been fully repurposed for domestic production.

The new lineup focuses on heavy, high-mobility trucks designed to handle off-road terrain and severe operating conditions. All models feature a six-wheel drive (6×6) configuration. These machines are engineered to serve industries that require robust transport, such as mining, road construction, and the development of infrastructure in remote areas.

During the launch ceremony, Mikhail Podvyaznikov, Deputy General Director of Almaz-Antey, stated that the project utilizes engineering solutions originally developed for military purposes, which have been adapted for civilian use. He announced that the company aims to produce approximately 600 vehicles in 2026, with the facility’s annual capacity expandable to 2,000 units in the future.

The project represents a total investment exceeding 10 billion rubles (129 million USD). Approximately 8 billion rubles (100 million USD) of this amount was provided by Promsvyazbank under a financing agreement to support the development and rollout of the new production line. The venture is further supported by a special investment contract signed earlier this year between the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Saint Petersburg government, and AO Romanov.

Additionally, Romanov has secured the status of an authorized manufacturer, which allows it to issue official electronic vehicle passports. In line with broader national efforts to reduce reliance on imported goods, the company plans to manufacture key components locally, relying on a network of suppliers from both Russia and Belarus.
